We noticed when there was a lot of conversation or when TV was playing, the Nest Mini would produce louder music and responses than when the room was completely quiet. The Mini is powered by a 15-watt power adapter connected to a DC power jack, a change from the former’s standard Micro USB connection. Even though it would’ve been ideal to get USB-C, given that it’s unlikely for the Nest Mini to be moved frequently, it’s perfectly alright for Google deciding to go with a proprietary connection.

If you want a powerful, fast, and attractive smart speaker for an affordable price, you won’t be disappointed with the Nest Mini. We were a bit surprised that Google waited so long to update its Mini speaker, yet it didn’t make any drastic changes to the device’s overall appearance. In part, that’s because they didn’t want to fix what wasn’t broken. Google made changes to the Mini only where needed, maintaining the affordable price, without compromising on design quality.

The Mini still has a microphone-off slider switch on the side, so you can disable the microphone anytime. The volume controls are capacitive touch buttons, but they’re now located on the sides of the device — with accompanying embedded LEDs to indicate their placements. When you touch each side of the device, the volume goes up or down. With just a tap – or your voice – control hundreds of compatible smart devices from one central display. If the device has been used before, factory reset your speaker or display before you continue.

If you're in the market for a Google Assistant-enabled smart speaker and need something small, the Nest Mini is a no-brainer. It's better than the original in just about every way. If you're looking to upgrade from the original Google Home Mini, instead, the answer is likely a yes.
Google Nest Mini (2nd Generation)
I use it all the time to listen to music and to control other smart home devices. One was given to me for free from a promotion and the other I purchased because of how much I liked the first one. I would definitely recommend this device to anyone who enjoys listening to music and has other smart home devices.

The Nest Mini can make free phone calls via Google Duo and you can use it as an intercom to call other Google/Nest speakers in the home. The Nest Mini’s sound was clearer though, and we could hear every layer of the music — clear mid tones, high tones, and bass. Manually controlling the volume isn’t all that necessary with the Nest Mini though, as the device automatically adjusts its volume based on the background noise in the room.
Nest Mini (Second Gen)
The company’s latest smart speaker is the Nest Audio, which currently sits in the middle of its lineup at $100 and offers a substantially more robust audio performance. Use touch controls to adjust the volume, media playback functions, and more of your Google Nest or Home speaker or display. Factory reset the device Turn the mic off, then press and hold the lights in the center of the Nest Audio. Factory reset the device Turn the mic off, then press and hold the lights in the center of the Nest Mini. Slightly better speaker, different power connector, small hook on the back to wall mount, lights on either side where you can tap to adjust the volume, there may be other things but I’m not sure. Durability and longevity are areas where Google Nest speakers tend to thrive.

One additional far-field microphone on the Nest Mini means that the unit can hear your commands better in any room, especially when there's other noise happening. The Google Home Mini only features two mics and sometimes has a hard time hearing commands if you've got kids playing loudly or are making a racket while cooking, for example. Google continues to add more and more features to its home devices.
You need to hold the touch panel for another 10 seconds to reset the Nest Mini. As explained in the Google Nest Mini layout, there is a microphone switch next to the power port . Google added a machine learning chip with up to one TeraOPS of processing power to Nest Mini, which allows the device to process commands locally. We absolutely noticed a difference in the response time, and in the quality of the Mini’s responses.
There’s no 3.5mm audio jack to connect an external speaker, but there is Bluetooth support. What’s interesting is that Google is still selling its predecessor, the Google Home Mini for $49. However, if you craving for something with more substance, consider Google’s current smart displays — the Google Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max. We tested out the Nest Mini to see how it stacks up against the rest of the pint-sized smart speaker pack. It gradually brightens the display and increases the alarm volume.
The microphones are also making use of a new feature Google calls ultrasound sensing. The speaker emits tiny inaudible chirps, which bounce off objects in the environment, reflect back to the microphones and tell the device if someone is near. This is turned on when music is playing, but you can opt out of it if you like in the Home app.

I was looking for an inexpensive way to link a Display on Google Home (good for Youtube music etc.) with a good but old audio system (speakers!)i n a different room. 2nd-gen Mini is "recognized" by Home app, and it will send music via bluetooth, but not as an audio link to a better speaker in a multi-room Group. I've seen posts that say you can do it, but after an hour I gave up. A physical audio-out port would have solved the problem, but the Mini does not have one. It's a significant improvement to an already excellent product, and it makes this the easiest small speaker to recommend if you want Google Assistant everywhere in your home.
You’ll be able to opt out of some settings, like Voice Match or personal results. You can change these settings at any time after you complete setup. The Google Home device's 10-digit alphanumeric serial number is located on the bottom of the device in the center. Two LEDs on the side of the Nest Mini show you where to tap for volume control. On the outside of the speaker, you'll find the same muting switch as before.

The speaker's top fabric is made from 100% recycled plastic, and the external enclosure is made from 35% recycled plastic. Google told me that one half-liter plastic bottle makes enough fabric to cover a little bit more than two speakers. That's a small design detail that could tip the scales for an environmentally conscious consumer trying to decide between the Nest Mini and anEcho Dot.
